Startups in Delhi: what the practice actually looks like

Delhi proper — as distinct from Gurugram and Noida across the border — builds startups that live close to policy and to trade. Ministries, regulators, think tanks and industry bodies are concentrated here, so govtech, public-health tech, climate and social-impact ventures find their first pilots and their grant funding in the city itself, often through a department rather than a fund. The other current runs through the trading families of Karol Bagh, Chandni Chowk and Nehru Place, where second-generation founders are turning distribution businesses into branded D2C labels or B2B ordering platforms with the family godown as the supply chain. IIT Delhi's incubation cell anchors a modest deep-tech and hardware pocket. The vibe is relationship-first and paperwork-heavy: tenders, MoUs, empanelment forms and grant reporting, all of which assume you are an institution with a letterhead and a domain, not a person with an app.

Delhi runs on trade, government and professional services. Nehru Place is one of Asia’s best-known IT hardware markets, Okhla and Naraina hold a dense band of small manufacturing and printing units, and Connaught Place remains the address consultancies and law firms want on a letterhead. A very large share of the city’s businesses are family-run trading firms dealing with buyers across north India.

Delhi has one of the highest per-capita incomes among Indian states and an unusually service-heavy economy — trade, hotels, transport, communication and business services dominate over manufacturing. Government and PSU procurement anchors a whole ecosystem of vendors, contractors and consultants that lives on formal correspondence.
