Law Firms in Surat: what the practice actually looks like

Surat has no High Court; appeals and writs go to the Gujarat High Court at Ahmedabad, and much of the local bar's value lies in preparing matters that someone else will argue there. The city's own docket is unmistakably commercial and unmistakably Surati: recovery suits and section 138 prosecutions arising from the diamond trade in Mahidharpura and Varachha, where enormous transactions have historically run on trust and thin paperwork, and disputes among textile traders and processing house owners in Ring Road markets. The commercial courts handle contract claims above the pecuniary threshold. Customs and GST work follows from Hazira port and the SEZ. Family and partnership disputes overlap constantly, because trading firms here are family firms, and a partition suit and a matrimonial matter are often the same quarrel in two forums. Labour matters arise from the powerloom units employing migrant workers.

Surat is the diamond capital of the world in the literal sense — the overwhelming majority of the world’s rough diamonds are cut and polished here, mostly in Varachha and Katargam. Alongside it runs an enormous man-made fabric and saree industry centred on the Ring Road markets, and Hazira holds heavy industry including petrochemicals, gas and steel.

An estimated nine out of ten of the world’s diamonds are cut and polished in Surat, and the city is also India’s largest producer of man-made fabric. The Surat Diamond Bourse, opened recently, is among the largest office buildings in the world by floor area.
