Startups in Coimbatore: what the practice actually looks like

Coimbatore's startups smell of machine oil. The city's century-old base in pumps, motors, textile machinery and foundries means a striking share of founders here are second-generation manufacturers building something physical — EV drivetrains, agricultural implements, industrial automation, retrofit IoT for older machines — or software that serves those industries. This gives Kongu-belt founders an advantage almost nobody else in India has: they can prototype, machine a part and test it within a few kilometres of the office, and their fathers' networks open factory doors for pilots. Engineering colleges like PSG and Amrita feed the talent pool, and a local incubator network supports the hardware track specifically. Capital habits mirror the manufacturing mindset — comfortable with capex, wary of dilution, and quick to point out that a machine that pays for itself in eighteen months is a better deal than a Series A. Customers are industrial buyers spread across India.

Coimbatore is an engineering town first and everything else second. It is India’s dominant centre for pump and motor manufacturing, supported by hundreds of foundries and job-work units, and it supplies a large share of the country’s textile machinery and spare parts. Saravanampatti has added an IT corridor, and the surrounding Tiruppur belt makes it a natural base for knitwear-adjacent businesses too.

Coimbatore produces a majority of India’s motors and pumps and is one of the country’s largest clusters of small and medium engineering units, including a very high concentration of foundries. The city and its region also form a major textile machinery manufacturing base.
