Startups in Kochi: what the practice actually looks like

Kochi runs the most actively state-supported startup ecosystem in south India. Kerala Startup Mission is not a nominal body — it operates real incubation space, funding schemes and an accelerator calendar that gives first-time founders somewhere to land, and Maker Village at Kalamassery gives hardware and electronics teams access to fabrication and testing facilities that simply do not exist in most Indian cities. That has made Kochi unusually strong in IoT, embedded systems and product hardware, alongside the SaaS and marine-and-logistics tech you would expect from a port city with Infopark next door. The angel base is distinctive too: a large Gulf and North American Malayali diaspora writes early cheques into companies back home, often into founders they know personally. Many founders themselves are returnees who spent a decade in the Emirates or the US and came back with capital, customers and a very low tolerance for theatre.

Kochi has been a spice port for centuries and still is — Kerala’s pepper, cardamom and marine export trade runs through the city and Willingdon Island. Infopark at Kakkanad has added a substantial IT and services workforce, the Cochin Port and the Vallarpadam transhipment terminal handle shipping, and Fort Kochi anchors a steady tourism economy.

Kochi is one of India’s principal centres for spice trading and marine product exports, and Cochin Port hosts the International Container Transhipment Terminal at Vallarpadam. Infopark Kochi is Kerala’s largest IT park by employment.
