Startups in Jaipur: what the practice actually looks like

Jaipur is not a startup hub and founders here do not pretend otherwise. What the city has is a talent pipeline from its private engineering colleges, cheap office space around Malviya Nagar and Vaishali Nagar, and a handful of trade specialisms — gems, jewellery, block-printed textiles, handicrafts and tourism — that have produced some genuinely good e-commerce and export-first ventures. Beyond that, most activity is agencies and dev studios slowly converting into products, plus edtech and SaaS teams whose entire customer base sits in Delhi, Mumbai, the US or the Gulf. Local institutional capital is close to nonexistent; angel rounds get assembled from Delhi contacts or NRI relatives. That geography defines the daily reality: a Jaipur founder is almost always selling to someone who will never visit, negotiating over email and video call, and quietly aware that being outside the metro is treated as a proxy for being small.

Jaipur is one of the world’s major centres for coloured gemstone cutting and jewellery, with the trade concentrated in the walled city and the export units in Sitapura. Around it sits a large handicrafts, blue pottery and hand-block textile economy that sells heavily to overseas buyers, plus a tourism industry that runs on inbound enquiries. C-Scheme holds the professional and government-facing offices.

Jaipur is regarded as one of the leading global hubs for gemstone cutting, polishing and coloured-stone jewellery, and the Sitapura SEZ was built specifically around that export trade. Rajasthan tourism draws a very large volume of foreign visitors, most of whom pass through the city.
