Law Firms in Mumbai: what the practice actually looks like

The Bombay High Court is one of the few in India that still hears suits on its original side, so a Mumbai practice files plaints, chamber summonses and notices of motion in the same building where it argues appeals. Admiralty is a live speciality here — ship arrest applications tied to vessels at the JNPT and Mumbai Port anchorages come in at odd hours and move fast. Securities work anchors the advisory side: SEBI show-cause notices, consent applications and appeals to the Securities Appellate Tribunal at Bandra Kurla Complex. NCLT Mumbai carries the heaviest insolvency docket in the country, with financial creditors, resolution professionals and homebuyer groups all filing against the same corporate debtor. Add institutional arbitration seated in the city, rent-act and redevelopment disputes under the Maharashtra housing laws, and DRT proceedings for the banks headquartered a few streets away.

Mumbai is the head office of corporate India. The Reserve Bank of India, the BSE and NSE, most large banks, mutual funds and insurers are headquartered within a few kilometres of each other, and Bandra Kurla Complex has absorbed much of the overflow from Nariman Point. Around that core sits an enormous services layer — chartered accountants, law firms, ad agencies, broking outfits and freight forwarders.

Mumbai contributes a larger share of India's income tax and corporate tax collections than any other city, and both national stock exchanges are based here. The Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Navi Mumbai is among the busiest container ports in the country, which is why so much of India's customs-clearing and freight-forwarding trade is run out of the city.
