Startups in Nashik: what the practice actually looks like

Nashik's startup activity grows out of grapes, wine and gearboxes. The vineyards and the surrounding horticulture belt — onions, tomatoes, grapes for both table and wine — have produced a cluster of agritech and cold-chain ventures working on grading, storage, price discovery and export documentation, which is a genuinely hard problem here because the produce is perishable and the buyer is often three states away. The Satpur and Ambad industrial estates, with their auto-component and defence suppliers, support a smaller set of manufacturing-tech and industrial-services companies. A wave of food and beverage D2C brands has emerged from producers who used to sell only to distributors. Nashik is close enough to both Mumbai and Pune that founders raise there and hire here, which keeps costs down but leaves the local ecosystem thin: no resident funds, few accelerator programmes, and a founder community small enough to fit in one room.

Nashik combines industry with agriculture in an unusual way. Satpur and Ambad MIDC hold automobile component, engineering and electronics units feeding the Pune and Mumbai supply chains, while the surrounding district is India’s leading grape-growing belt and the centre of its wine industry. Defence and aerospace manufacturing has a long-established presence in the city too.

Nashik is the heart of India’s wine industry, with the majority of the country’s wineries located in and around the district, and it is India’s largest grape-producing region. The district is also a major exporter of table grapes and onions.
