Startups in Visakhapatnam: what the practice actually looks like

Visakhapatnam is a state-sponsored ecosystem in its early chapters. Andhra Pradesh has pushed hard to position the city as its technology and financial-services counterweight to Hyderabad, with IT space around Rushikonda and a stream of policy announcements aimed at attracting founders. The startups that have actually taken root are tied to the city's real economy: maritime and port logistics software, aquaculture and fisheries technology serving the coastal districts, pharma and specialty-chemical services feeding the plants at Parawada, and a modest IT-services layer. Engineering talent comes from Andhra University and the regional colleges, but the gravitational pull of Hyderabad is strong and many good people take that flight. Local angel investment is sparse and largely comes from established industrialists rather than former founders, so cheques are conservative and expect visible traction. Most companies here are selling to industrial or institutional buyers rather than consumers.

Visakhapatnam is built around its port and its steel plant. The Visakhapatnam Port is one of India’s major cargo ports and supports a whole layer of shipping agents, stevedores and customs brokers, while the steel plant at Gajuwaka anchors heavy engineering. The pharma cluster at Parawada and JNPC handles bulk drugs, and Rushikonda has developed an IT SEZ along the coast.

Visakhapatnam hosts one of India’s major ports by cargo throughput and is home to a large integrated steel plant. The Jawaharlal Nehru Pharma City at Parawada nearby is one of the country’s significant bulk drug manufacturing clusters, and the city is also an Indian Navy Eastern Naval Command base.
