Startups in Mysuru: what the practice actually looks like

Mysuru's startup story is largely a spillover story. Three hours from Bengaluru with a fraction of its rent and traffic, the city attracts engineers who have done their time in Whitefield and want to raise a family somewhere calmer, plus alumni of the large IT campus on the city's edge. What results is a scattering of small, remote-first software teams — niche SaaS, design and engineering studios, and product companies whose customers are entirely elsewhere — rather than a clustered ecosystem with its own events and funding circuit. A separate thread runs through heritage trade: silk, sandalwood, yoga tourism and Mysore-specific crafts turned into D2C brands with a strong story. There are no resident venture funds and few local angels, so raising means going to Bengaluru anyway. The trade-off most founders here have explicitly accepted is less serendipity in exchange for lower burn and a better life.

Mysuru trades on heritage and increasingly on technology. The palace, Dasara and the surrounding heritage circuit sustain a large hospitality and travel economy, while the Hebbal Industrial Area and campuses along the outskirts have made the city a serious secondary IT destination for firms priced out of Bengaluru. Mysore silk, sandalwood products and the industrial belt at Nanjangud round out the base.

Mysuru is one of Karnataka’s most visited destinations, with the Mysore Palace among India’s most visited monuments, and Mysore silk carries a Geographical Indication tag. The city has also grown into Karnataka’s second IT hub after Bengaluru.
