Startups in Rajkot: what the practice actually looks like

Rajkot is Saurashtra's engineering workshop — castings, forgings, diesel engines, submersible pumps and CNC machining spread across the Aji and Metoda estates and out along Shapar. Startups here are almost always adjacent to that: shop-floor automation and machine monitoring retrofitted onto existing lathes, B2B platforms for engineering goods and spares, and export-facing D2C plays selling pumps, tools and hardware to buyers in Africa and West Asia. Founders are typically from manufacturing families, comfortable buying a machine on a five-year view and deeply sceptical of giving away equity to fund a spreadsheet projection. Growth gets financed by the existing unit's cashflow or by working-capital limits, and success is measured in orders shipped rather than valuation marks. There is no meaningful venture presence in the city. Business relationships travel through trade associations, exhibitions and long-standing buyer contacts rather than through demo days.
