Startups in Vadodara: what the practice actually looks like

Vadodara sits in the middle of one of India's densest industrial corridors — petrochemicals, heavy electricals, specialty chemicals and pharma stretching out through Makarpura, Nandesari and Savli — and its startups almost all point at that. What gets built here is plant-facing: automation and instrumentation, condition monitoring, EHS and compliance software, procurement tools for chemical trading, and engineering services that gradually productise. MSU and the regional engineering colleges supply the technical talent, much of which would otherwise join the surrounding plants. Founders here frequently fund the product with consulting or contract-engineering revenue from the very industries they sell to, which keeps them solvent and slow. There is very little venture activity in the city itself; capital, when it is sought, comes from Ahmedabad or Mumbai. The upside is a customer base that pays real money for measurable plant savings and does not care whether you have a Series A.

Vadodara is an engineering and petrochemicals city. The Nandesari and Savli industrial estates carry chemical and pharma units, Makarpura GIDC holds a dense band of engineering and fabrication workshops, and the wider Vadodara–Ankleshwar corridor is one of India’s core chemical belts. The city’s long association with heavy electricals and oil and gas engineering keeps a large base of technical consultancies and EPC contractors here.

Vadodara sits in Gujarat’s petrochemical heartland, close to one of India’s largest refinery and petrochemical complexes, and the state leads the country in chemical output. The city is also a long-standing centre for heavy electrical equipment and oil and gas engineering services.
