Startups in Surat: what the practice actually looks like

Surat has enormous business energy and very little of what most people mean by a startup ecosystem. Diamond polishing units in Varachha and the textile markets off Ring Road generate cash on a scale that dwarfs any local seed fund, but that capital moves through family and community networks, not term sheets. The interesting founders here are second-generation: children of diamond or saree traders who studied elsewhere, came back, and are digitising the family trade — B2B fabric and stone marketplaces, credit and settlement tools for a business that still runs partly on trust-based ledgers, and logistics software for a supply chain that ships nationwide daily. A parallel wave of D2C apparel brands is emerging directly from mills that used to sell only wholesale. Anyone seeking institutional money makes the trip to Mumbai; anyone seeking customers finds them among people who have known the family for decades.

Surat is the diamond capital of the world in the literal sense — the overwhelming majority of the world’s rough diamonds are cut and polished here, mostly in Varachha and Katargam. Alongside it runs an enormous man-made fabric and saree industry centred on the Ring Road markets, and Hazira holds heavy industry including petrochemicals, gas and steel.

An estimated nine out of ten of the world’s diamonds are cut and polished in Surat, and the city is also India’s largest producer of man-made fabric. The Surat Diamond Bourse, opened recently, is among the largest office buildings in the world by floor area.
