Manufacturers in Coimbatore: what the practice actually looks like

Coimbatore is a genuine engineering town, and the cluster is unusually self-contained: electric motors and pumpsets, wet grinders, foundries and castings, textile machinery and spares, and the machine shops that serve all of them, spread across the SIDCO estates at Kurichi, Malumichampatti and Peelamedu, plus Sulur, Annur and the Avinashi road belt. The pump and motor makers sell nationally through dealer and irrigation-equipment networks, the foundries supply castings well outside Tamil Nadu, and textile machinery firms serve mills in Tiruppur, Erode and beyond. A distinctive feature is the density of subcontracting — one order commonly passes through a foundry, a machining shop, a plating unit and an assembler, all within a few kilometres and all with their own paperwork. Many units are second- or third-generation family firms with long-standing dealer relationships and an increasingly export-facing pump and casting business.

Coimbatore is an engineering town first and everything else second. It is India’s dominant centre for pump and motor manufacturing, supported by hundreds of foundries and job-work units, and it supplies a large share of the country’s textile machinery and spare parts. Saravanampatti has added an IT corridor, and the surrounding Tiruppur belt makes it a natural base for knitwear-adjacent businesses too.

Coimbatore produces a majority of India’s motors and pumps and is one of the country’s largest clusters of small and medium engineering units, including a very high concentration of foundries. The city and its region also form a major textile machinery manufacturing base.
