Exporters in Delhi: what the practice actually looks like

Delhi's export trade is a buying-house and trading-firm trade. Karol Bagh, Chandni Chowk and the Okhla industrial belt feed handicrafts, home furnishings, brassware, fashion jewellery and readymade garments to buyers in the US, UK and Gulf, often through agents and buying offices that place orders on behalf of overseas retail chains. A great deal of the city's exporting is done by firms that source from Moradabad, Panipat, Firozabad and Agra rather than manufacture themselves. Cargo goes out through ICD Tughlakabad and ICD Patparganj for sea legs to Nhava Sheva or Mundra, and through the Delhi air cargo terminal for sampling, small jewellery consignments and anything the buyer wants before a season. DGFT headquarters sits in the city, so licence, advance-authorisation and policy correspondence is unusually close at hand, and many north-Indian exporters route their DGFT representation through Delhi consultants.

Delhi runs on trade, government and professional services. Nehru Place is one of Asia’s best-known IT hardware markets, Okhla and Naraina hold a dense band of small manufacturing and printing units, and Connaught Place remains the address consultancies and law firms want on a letterhead. A very large share of the city’s businesses are family-run trading firms dealing with buyers across north India.

Delhi has one of the highest per-capita incomes among Indian states and an unusually service-heavy economy — trade, hotels, transport, communication and business services dominate over manufacturing. Government and PSU procurement anchors a whole ecosystem of vendors, contractors and consultants that lives on formal correspondence.
