Exporters in Guwahati: what the practice actually looks like

Guwahati is the trading centre of the Northeast and its export flows reflect that. Assam tea from the Brahmaputra and Barak valley gardens is the anchor commodity, moving largely by road and rail to Kolkata for auction and shipment onward to buyers in the UK, Europe, the Middle East, Russia and Iran; the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre itself is a significant price-setting venue. Alongside tea, agarwood and agar oil, bamboo and cane products, handloom silks including muga and eri, spices, and fresh horticulture move out. The city's other distinctive trade is cross-border: land customs stations along the Bangladesh and Bhutan borders, including Sutarkandi, Dawki and Jogighopa, carry goods overland to neighbouring countries, and the Brahmaputra waterway route to Bangladesh has been revived for some cargo. Distance from any seaport makes transit time and inland freight the defining constraint on every Guwahati export quotation.

Goods bound for seven states pass through its warehouses and distribution networks, Fancy Bazar remains the wholesale trading heart, and the city hosts one of the world’s largest tea auction centres. The Guwahati Tea Auction Centre is among the largest CTC tea auction centres in the world, and Assam is India’s largest tea-producing state. The city functions as the principal distribution and logistics gateway for all eight northeastern states.
