Consultants in Surat: what the practice actually looks like

Surat's consultants sell to two trades that barely overlap. In diamonds, the Katargam and Varachha cutting and polishing units and the newer Diamond Bourse offices buy process-yield improvement, inventory and valuation systems, family-partnership restructuring and, lately, compliance advisory around lab-grown stone certification and export documentation. In textiles, the Pandesara and Sachin polyester and dyeing-mill belt buys production costing, effluent-compliance support, machine-utilisation studies and GST advisory on the notoriously complicated job-work chain. A third, smaller group advises the newer chemical and engineering units. Buyers are entrepreneurs who built the business themselves, so consultants are hired for a specific measurable outcome and dropped quickly if it does not appear. Fees are modest, decisions are same-day, and much of the work arrives through the trade associations and community networks that structure business here far more than any formal marketing does.

Surat is the diamond capital of the world in the literal sense — the overwhelming majority of the world’s rough diamonds are cut and polished here, mostly in Varachha and Katargam. Alongside it runs an enormous man-made fabric and saree industry centred on the Ring Road markets, and Hazira holds heavy industry including petrochemicals, gas and steel.

An estimated nine out of ten of the world’s diamonds are cut and polished in Surat, and the city is also India’s largest producer of man-made fabric. The Surat Diamond Bourse, opened recently, is among the largest office buildings in the world by floor area.
