Exporters in Bengaluru: what the practice actually looks like

Bengaluru's export profile is unusual because the largest part of it is not cargo at all — software services and engineering R&D billed to overseas clients under SOFTEX filings rather than shipping bills. Alongside that sits a real physical export trade: aerospace and defence components, precision machined parts, electronics and industrial machinery from the Peenya, Jigani and Bommasandra belts, and a long-established floriculture and horticulture flow — cut roses, gherkins and fresh produce — that leaves through Kempegowda International Airport's perishable cargo terminal to Europe and the Gulf. Air freight matters here far more than in most Indian cities; a Bengaluru exporter is as likely to be negotiating with an airline's cargo desk as with a shipping line. Sea consignments move by road to Chennai port or through ICD Whitefield. Buyer relationships tend to be technical and long-running, with drawing revisions and quality documentation flowing by email for months before a first shipment.

Bengaluru is India’s software capital and its startup capital at the same time. Electronic City and Whitefield hold the large IT services and captive engineering centres, while Koramangala, Indiranagar and the HSR belt are thick with early-stage SaaS companies, agencies and D2C brands. Aerospace, defence electronics and biotech research add a deep-tech layer most other Indian cities do not have.

Karnataka accounts for the largest share of India’s software exports, and almost all of it flows through Bengaluru. The city hosts the country’s densest concentration of technology startups and global capability centres, along with major public-sector aerospace and defence research establishments.
