Exporters in Jaipur: what the practice actually looks like

Jaipur exports what it has made for centuries. Coloured gemstones — emeralds, rubies and semi-precious stones cut in the Johari Bazar and Gopalji ka Rasta workshops — silver and fashion jewellery, blue pottery, blockprinted and handblocked textiles, and wooden and metal handicrafts go to buyers in the US, Europe and the Gulf. The city has a functioning gem and jewellery export ecosystem including assaying and hallmarking, and a great deal of the trade runs on high-value, low-volume air consignments through Sanganer airport or through Delhi air cargo, with insurance and valuation questions that bulk exporters rarely face. Sea cargo, mostly furniture and handicrafts in volume, moves through ICD Jaipur at Kanakpura and on to Mundra or Nhava Sheva. Buyers frequently visit in person during the season and place repeat orders against samples, so sample despatch and photograph exchange by email is a constant part of the trade.

Jaipur is one of the world’s major centres for coloured gemstone cutting and jewellery, with the trade concentrated in the walled city and the export units in Sitapura. Around it sits a large handicrafts, blue pottery and hand-block textile economy that sells heavily to overseas buyers, plus a tourism industry that runs on inbound enquiries. Jaipur is regarded as one of the leading global hubs for gemstone cutting, polishing and coloured-stone jewellery, and the Sitapura SEZ was built specifically around that export trade. Rajasthan tourism draws a very large volume of foreign visitors, most of whom pass through the city.
