CA Firms in Mumbai: what the practice actually looks like

A Mumbai practice sits closer to the regulators than any other, and the client list shows it. Fort and Nariman Point firms carry listed-company statutory audits, limited reviews on a quarterly clock, SEBI LODR certificates and merchant-banker due diligence. The BKC crowd leans towards NBFCs, AIFs and portfolio managers, where RBI returns, fair-value memos and Ind AS 109 provisioning eat the calendar. Andheri East and Lower Parel firms pick up media production houses with per-episode revenue recognition, ad agencies, and the film-industry habit of settling by credit note. Down at Navi Mumbai and JNPT you find the customs house agents and freight forwarders, whose GST questions are all about place of supply on ocean freight and reverse charge on foreign commission. Two more constants: SEZ units at SEEPZ needing LUT and refund files, and diamond and bullion clients in Zaveri Bazar where stock valuation is its own discipline.

Mumbai is the head office of corporate India. The Reserve Bank of India, the BSE and NSE, most large banks, mutual funds and insurers are headquartered within a few kilometres of each other, and Bandra Kurla Complex has absorbed much of the overflow from Nariman Point. Around that core sits an enormous services layer — chartered accountants, law firms, ad agencies, broking outfits and freight forwarders.

Mumbai contributes a larger share of India's income tax and corporate tax collections than any other city, and both national stock exchanges are based here. The Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Navi Mumbai is among the busiest container ports in the country, which is why so much of India's customs-clearing and freight-forwarding trade is run out of the city.
