Manufacturers in Mumbai: what the practice actually looks like

Manufacturing in Mumbai has largely migrated out of the island city into the Thane-Belapur belt, Taloja, Ambernath and Dombivli MIDC, leaving the head office in Andheri or Lower Parel and the shed an hour away in Navi Mumbai. Typical units here are chemicals and specialty intermediates, packaging and printing, pharma formulation job work, electrical panels and switchgear, and engineering fabrication feeding EPC contractors. A large share of the work is not direct-to-consumer at all — it is contract manufacture and loan licensing for brands headquartered in the city. The commercial centre of gravity stays in Mumbai because that is where the buyer's purchase head, the CHA, the bank and the trading house all sit. That split is the defining operational fact: quotations and negotiation happen from a Mumbai office address while dispatch, e-way bills and inspection happen at a MIDC plot the buyer may never visit.

Mumbai is the head office of corporate India. The Reserve Bank of India, the BSE and NSE, most large banks, mutual funds and insurers are headquartered within a few kilometres of each other, and Bandra Kurla Complex has absorbed much of the overflow from Nariman Point. Around that core sits an enormous services layer — chartered accountants, law firms, ad agencies, broking outfits and freight forwarders.

Mumbai contributes a larger share of India's income tax and corporate tax collections than any other city, and both national stock exchanges are based here. The Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Navi Mumbai is among the busiest container ports in the country, which is why so much of India's customs-clearing and freight-forwarding trade is run out of the city.
