Manufacturers in Surat: what the practice actually looks like

Surat manufacturing is two great industries side by side. The man-made fibre chain — texturising, weaving on water-jet and rapier looms, and the dyeing and printing mills concentrated in Pandesara, Sachin, Katargam and along the Udhna belt — turns polyester yarn into finished fabric that moves out through the Ring Road textile markets. Alongside it sits diamond cutting and polishing in Varachha and Katargam, now joined by the new trading complex at Khajod. A third and growing layer is embroidery and value-addition job work. The commercial pattern is distinctive: much of the weaving and processing is job work on someone else's greige, so the mill is paid a conversion rate rather than selling goods, and the paperwork is delivery challans and job-work invoices rather than straight sales bills. Buyers are traders in Surat's own markets and in Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata.

Surat is the diamond capital of the world in the literal sense — the overwhelming majority of the world’s rough diamonds are cut and polished here, mostly in Varachha and Katargam. Alongside it runs an enormous man-made fabric and saree industry centred on the Ring Road markets, and Hazira holds heavy industry including petrochemicals, gas and steel.

An estimated nine out of ten of the world’s diamonds are cut and polished in Surat, and the city is also India’s largest producer of man-made fabric. The Surat Diamond Bourse, opened recently, is among the largest office buildings in the world by floor area.
