Travel Agencies in Delhi: what the practice actually looks like

Delhi's travel trade is dominated by inbound tour operators — the IATO-heavy cluster around Connaught Place, Rajendra Place, Karol Bagh and Paharganj that has sold the Golden Triangle to European and American agents for decades. Their working day is spent quoting FIT itineraries to overseas agents, blocking rooms in Agra and Jaipur, and rostering the fleet of Innovas and coaches that leave every morning from Delhi hotels. Around them sits a large visa and documentation trade, helped by the fact that most embassies and VFS centres are in the city, so agents handle Schengen and US files for clients across north India. Delhi is also the originating point for Nepal, Bhutan, Kashmir and Ladakh programmes, and Paharganj still runs the backpacker end — cheap Kathmandu tickets, hostel bookings and overland onward legs to Rishikesh and Manali.

Delhi runs on trade, government and professional services. Nehru Place is one of Asia’s best-known IT hardware markets, Okhla and Naraina hold a dense band of small manufacturing and printing units, and Connaught Place remains the address consultancies and law firms want on a letterhead. A very large share of the city’s businesses are family-run trading firms dealing with buyers across north India.

Delhi has one of the highest per-capita incomes among Indian states and an unusually service-heavy economy — trade, hotels, transport, communication and business services dominate over manufacturing. Government and PSU procurement anchors a whole ecosystem of vendors, contractors and consultants that lives on formal correspondence.
