Exporters in Kanpur: what the practice actually looks like

Kanpur exports leather. The tanneries along the Ganga at Jajmau, and the finishing and manufacturing units around them, produce finished leather, leather garments, industrial and safety gloves, footwear and footwear uppers, and the saddlery and harness trade for which the city is genuinely internationally known — equestrian goods that go to buyers in Germany, the UK, the US and Australia. Defence and ordnance-linked engineering, plastics and textiles add smaller export streams. The trade lives with real regulatory pressure: effluent-treatment compliance affects tannery operations directly, and European buyers apply restricted-substance testing, chrome-VI limits and REACH-driven chemical requirements to every consignment. Cargo moves through ICD Kanpur and onward by rail to Nhava Sheva or Mundra, with air cargo via Lucknow or Delhi for saddlery samples. Buyer relationships in saddlery in particular are decades-old and built on repeat orders against established patterns and specifications.

Kanpur is India’s leather city. Jajmau holds one of the country’s largest concentrations of tanneries and leather goods units, exporting shoes, saddlery and finished leather worldwide. Panki and Dada Nagar carry chemicals, engineering and textile units, and the city’s old ordnance and defence-supply links still support a base of engineering vendors.

Kanpur, and Jajmau in particular, is one of India’s largest leather tanning and export clusters, historically supplying military saddlery and today shipping finished leather and footwear abroad. The city was one of north India’s earliest industrial centres, which is why it was long called the Manchester of the East.
