Exporters in Lucknow: what the practice actually looks like

Lucknow's export trade rests on craft and agriculture. Chikankari embroidery from the old-city ateliers around Chowk and Aminabad goes to buyers in the Gulf, the US and the UK, largely as apparel and made-ups produced through a dispersed network of home-based artisans, which makes lead-time and quality communication with buyers unusually delicate. Zardozi and other embellished work follows the same route. Around the city, basmati rice from the Uttar Pradesh belt is a significant export, processed and shipped by firms with their own mills, going mainly to Iran, Saudi Arabia and other Gulf markets, with pesticide-residue and quality certification requirements that get stricter with every buyer season. Cargo moves through ICD Amausi near the airport and onward to Nhava Sheva or Mundra, with Kandla used for some rice consignments. Air cargo through Chaudhary Charan Singh airport carries samples and smaller chikan consignments.

Lucknow is the administrative capital of India’s most populous state, and a great deal of business here touches government departments, PSUs and their vendor networks. Gomti Nagar and Vibhuti Khand hold the newer corporate offices and IT firms, Hazratganj remains the traditional commercial centre, and the city is the home of chikankari embroidery, a craft export trade with a strong overseas following.
