Exporters in Mumbai: what the practice actually looks like

Mumbai exporters mostly sit one step removed from the factory. The city is where merchant exporters, trading houses, commodity desks and the CHA fraternity operate, buying from mills and units across Maharashtra and Gujarat and shipping through JNPT at Nhava Sheva. Gems and jewellery move out of the SEEPZ and Bharat Diamond Bourse ecosystem at BKC, chemicals and dyes route down from Vapi and Ankleshwar, and pharmaceutical formulations leave through the air cargo complex at Sahar. The AD bank branches that handle export finance, packing credit, LC advising and negotiation are almost all within Fort, Nariman Point or BKC, which is why so many upcountry exporters keep a Mumbai correspondence office purely to sit near their banker and their forwarder. Freight negotiation is a daily sport here: shipping-line offices, NVOCCs and consolidators are local, so rate emails and booking confirmations run at a pace unfamiliar to smaller ports.

Mumbai is the head office of corporate India. The Reserve Bank of India, the BSE and NSE, most large banks, mutual funds and insurers are headquartered within a few kilometres of each other, and Bandra Kurla Complex has absorbed much of the overflow from Nariman Point. Around that core sits an enormous services layer — chartered accountants, law firms, ad agencies, broking outfits and freight forwarders.

Mumbai contributes a larger share of India's income tax and corporate tax collections than any other city, and both national stock exchanges are based here. The Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Navi Mumbai is among the busiest container ports in the country, which is why so much of India's customs-clearing and freight-forwarding trade is run out of the city.
