Exporters in Pune: what the practice actually looks like

Pune exports engineering. Auto components, castings and forgings, machine tools, pumps, valves and industrial automation equipment come out of the Chakan, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Ranjangaon, Talegaon and Bhosari belts, largely to Tier-1 and OEM customers in Germany, Italy, the US and increasingly Southeast Asia. A meaningful share of the city's exporters are second- or third-tier suppliers into global programmes, which means audits, supplier-quality visits and IATF-driven documentation are routine parts of the buyer relationship. Software and engineering-services exports from Hinjewadi and Kharadi run in parallel under SOFTEX. Containers move by road to JNPT at Nhava Sheva, roughly a three-to-four-hour run, and through ICD Talegaon and ICD Dighi for stuffing closer to the plant. Because JNPT cut-offs govern the week, transporter coordination, stuffing dates and shipping-bill filing dominate a Pune export team's email traffic far more than buyer negotiation does.

Pune has two distinct economies that feed each other. Hinjewadi and Kharadi hold a large IT and business-services workforce, while Pimpri-Chinchwad, Chakan and Ranjangaon form one of India’s heaviest automobile and engineering manufacturing belts. A long-standing university and coaching ecosystem keeps supplying engineers to both.

The Pune region is one of India’s largest automotive manufacturing clusters, covering passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, two-wheelers and a deep component supply chain. Alongside it, Hinjewadi’s Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park is among the country’s biggest planned IT parks by employment.
