Travel Agencies in Mumbai: what the practice actually looks like

Mumbai is where the Indian travel trade wholesales itself. The big air consolidators sit in Andheri, Marol and Fort, holding airline deals that half the retail agents in the country ticket against, and most foreign carriers keep their India sales offices within reach of the airport. IATA-accredited houses here run corporate travel desks for banks, broking firms, pharma and media companies, booking last-minute BKC-to-Singapore business class and film unit movements with equal urgency. The outbound leisure trade is heavily Gujarati and Marwari family group departures out of the western suburbs, while the Mumbai cruise terminal has pulled a whole set of agents into short-sailing packages. Add a busy Haj and Umrah segment, an inbound layer handling Elephanta and Ajanta-Ellora extensions, and the marine and offshore crew-change ticketing that Mumbai's shipping agents feed to specialist travel desks.

Mumbai is the head office of corporate India. The Reserve Bank of India, the BSE and NSE, most large banks, mutual funds and insurers are headquartered within a few kilometres of each other, and Bandra Kurla Complex has absorbed much of the overflow from Nariman Point. Around that core sits an enormous services layer — chartered accountants, law firms, ad agencies, broking outfits and freight forwarders.

Mumbai contributes a larger share of India's income tax and corporate tax collections than any other city, and both national stock exchanges are based here. The Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Navi Mumbai is among the busiest container ports in the country, which is why so much of India's customs-clearing and freight-forwarding trade is run out of the city.
